60-Year-old Colombian man Dies legally by Euthanasia

Euthanasia: legal or attempted suicide? Victor Escobar, a 60-Year-old Colombian man Dies legally by Euthanasia under the new euthanasia policy. He celebrated and called a victory after a two-year-long battle with a lung ailment.

What is euthanasia?
Euthanasia is the deliberate ending of a person’s life to relieve pain and suffering. As per records, the Netherlands is the first country to legalize euthanasia. Victor Escobar chose to die in public, becoming one of the first Latin Americans to do so without suffering from a serious illness, thanks to a groundbreaking
Colombian court verdict.

Two-year-old battle with the lung ailment left Escobar unable to breathe on his own. He then finally decided to end his life.

In the year 1997, Colombia penalize assisted death, and in 2021, a Colombian high court expanded “the right to dignified death” to those not suffering from a terminal illness.

Colombia has become the first country to take steps to legalize euthanasia even after being the most Roman Catholic. The church opposes euthanasia and calls it assisted suicide.

“I had already begun to feel ill. My lungs seemed to be rebelling against me “In October, as he entered the final round of his legal battle, Escobar told AFP. Only Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, and Spain have made euthanasia lawful in Europe.

Colombia may have been added to the list, but access to the procedure is not always straightforward.

Since the July 2021 legislative change, the government claims that at least 157persons have chosen euthanasia.

Escobar made his death by euthanasia public and died in the city of Cali with doctors present. He said God will not punish me for trying to stop suffering.

As per the arguments on whether euthanasia is legal or attempted suicide, then some experts come to the view that “the right to die should be a matter of personal choice.” If we talk about countries, let’s say India, the world’s largest democracy, since march 2018 passive euthanasia is legal in India under strict guidelines.

Patients must have a living will and be terminally sick or in a vegetative state to consent.

India is rich in its cultural heritage euthanasia is known as an old age practice. Especially in the Jain tradition euthanasia, is categorization as Sallekhana.

Euthanasia is broadly into four parts: active, passive, indirect, physician-assisted.

After two years of unsuccessful petitions, a tribunal at the Imbanaco clinic denied Escobar’s plea for euthanasia in October of last year.

The committee contended that Escobar’s condition was not terminal and that there were still measures to help him.

In another city, Medellin, 51-year-old Martha Sepulveda who suffers from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis had her desire to die but at the last minute canceled because she was not terminal. Shortly before death, Escobar said, God does not like to see its children suffer.
